The documents below pertain to the 1995 litigation initiated by Courtney Love against the Washington State Patrol and were obtained publically from King County Superior Court.
That litigation sought to bar the Patrol from releasing a copy of the greenhouse note discovered near Kurt Cobain’s body on April 8, 1994 and a copy of a comparison document utilized by the Patrol to establish authorship of the greenhouse note. The comparison document is reported to have been written by Mr. Cobain shortly prior to his overdose in Rome, Italy, approximately one month before his death.
Made clear in correspondence submitted by the Patrol’s legal counsel prior to the litigation, and obtained from the Seattle Police Department’s publicly available Cobain case file, the Patrol did not at the time deem either of the documents as exempt from disclosure under Washington state public records law.
In addition to the greenhouse note, multiple public legal documents from the lawsuit suggest the Seattle Police Department also retained possession of a copy of the “Rome” note.
The lawsuit brought by Ms. Love succeeded in preventing the Patrol from releasing the copies of the two notes in the Patrol’s possession.
